Prosthetics
is the science or field of practice pertaining to prescribe, design,
fabrication and fitting of artificial limbs or any segment of the
body who have lost as a result of traumatic injuries, vascular
diseases, diabetes, cancer or congenital disorders, to
restore the function and appearance of the lost segment. The
fabrication of prosthesis is necessarily an intricate, custom
procedure requiring a high degree of skill and sophisticated technology, as
there is big difference in the human anatomy. The temporary
prosthesis is followed by a definite prosthesis as soon as the
residual limb is stable. The person who is qualified or
specialized in prosthetics science is known as Prosthetist
and the product is called prosthesis.
The
design of the prosthesis is determined by the patient's physical changes, level
of activity and functional needs. Children need new prostheses on
a more frequent basis due to rapid growth rate and high activity
level. The adjustment of prosthesis, repairs, realignment, and
components up gradation are also aspects of ongoing treatment.
